Senate and House Republicans are gearing up for what they hope will be a GOP-controlled White House and Congress after the upcoming election.
According to insiders, staff from Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate GOP Whip John Thune, Speaker Mike Johnson, and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise have convened to outline a strategy for 2025, should their party secure majorities in Congress on Election Day.
The Republican leaders in both legislative branches are crafting a plan for former President Donald Trump’s initial 100 days if he wins back the White House, The Hill reported.
There’s considerable activity across various House committees, who are “hitting the ground running,” as part of the preparations underway.
Sen. John Barrasso, who is set to become the Senate Republican whip, disclosed to The Hill that he has been collaborating with Trump’s transition team leaders, Howard Lutnick and Linda McMahon, to formulate a roadmap for Trump’s first 100 days.
“The transition team is more prepared. They are better staffed [than Trump’s team was after the 2016 election], and they are laser focused on getting out of the gates quickly,” Barrasso noted, highlighting their focus on rapid execution.
Republican insiders revealed that McConnell, Thune, and Sen. Mike Crapo are leading preliminary talks on the first significant bill they aim to pass in 2025.
They plan to rapidly advance a colossal budget reconciliation package to honor Trump’s commitment to slashing taxes by trillions, which is being spearheaded by McConnel and Thune’s teams.
They’re also attempting to fund a border security initiative that would complete the border wall and could defund parts of the government that have been “weaponized” by the Biden administration.
Amongst their goals, the first step will be extending the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act before the legislation expires by the end of 2025.
