President Joe Biden’s assertion that he could have won reelection was reportedly deemed “flat out bonkers” by Harry Enten, a senior statistical reporter for CNN.
According to Biden, if he had remained in the race and not endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, he would have defeated President-elect Donald Trump, he stated in an interview with USA Today this week.
“It’s presumptuous to say that, but I think yes based on the polling,” Biden said regarding potentially beating Trump in the 2024 election.
In the same interview, he expressed uncertainty about whether he would have had the “vigor” to serve another four years in the White House.
Biden did not specify whose polling he was referring to, and as Enten said, the figures before to Biden’s withdrawal do not indicate that he was on track to win.
“Joe Biden in his exit interview with USA Today claims he could have beaten Donald Trump had he stayed in the race, so this begs the question: could Biden have won the 2024 election had he stayed in the race? Truthfully, I categorize this statement as flat-out bonkers.” Enten said.
Enten demonstrated how polling at the time of Biden’s withdrawal suggested Trump had an easier path to 270 electoral votes.
“Look at those Great Lake battleground states. You know the ones I’m talking about, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Donald Trump ahead in all three. How about here in the southeast, North Carolina, Georgia, again, Trump leads. How about here in the southwest, Nevada, Arizona, again, Trump leads, but it’s not just that Trump was ahead. He was ahead by a lot in these key battleground states,” Enten remarked.
“The bottom line is this. Joe Biden was behind. He had always been behind and he most likely would have stayed behind. And that’s why I categorize his statement that he could have won the 2024 election. It’s flat out bonkers.” he concluded.
