MSNBC President Steps Down in Wake of Trump’s Presidential Victory

Rashida Jones is resigning from her position as president of MSNBC according to a new report.

Jones, who has directed the progressive cable news network since 2021, disclosed her plan to depart during a call with network personnel on Tuesday morning.

Rebecca Kutler, who departed CNN in 2022 and was promptly recruited by Jones as senior vice president of content strategy at MSNBC, will be designated interim president of the network.

Kutler has managed dayside programming and non-linear material, including live events, streaming, digital platforms, films, and podcasts, at MSNBC.

In December, media writer Oliver Darcy indicated in his Status newsletter that Jones was contemplating an exit following the inauguration of President Donald Trump.

Following an election year in which MSNBC achieved notable ratings triumphs, including surpassing CNN for the first time during significant political news events, the network has faced considerable challenges since Trump’s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, resulting in a substantial disengagement from its predominantly leftist viewership.

Jones initially communicated her intention to lead MSNBC to Mark Lazarus, the former chairman of NBCUniversal and the forthcoming CEO of SpinCo, the new entity comprising Comcast’s cable assets, including MSNBC and CNBC, which are undergoing a spin-off.

She subsequently informed the senior anchors and prominent talent at the network prior to notifying the entire team on Tuesday morning.

The departure occurs during a critical period for MSNBC.

In addition to the post-election ratings challenges, employees are anxious about the network’s future under SpinCo, a corporation created from Comcast’s intention to divest itself of cable assets perceived as declining enterprises.
