California Governor Gavin Newsom has reportedly now officially broken with his fellow Democrats regarding the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports.
During a discussion on his new podcast, Newsom engaged with conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, where he openly acknowledged the fairness concerns surrounding this issue.
He stated that it is “deeply unfair” for transgender women to compete against cisgender women in sports, aligning with Kirk’s viewpoint.
“Would you say no men in female sports?” Kirk asked Newsom.
“Well, I think it’s an issue of fairness, I completely agree with you on that. It is an issue of fairness, it’s deeply unfair. I am not wrestling with the fairness issue. I totally agree with you.” Newsom said in response.
Newsom highlighted the ongoing debate, referencing the case of AB Hernandez, a transgender high school track star whose recent victory in a women’s competition sparked controversy.
He expressed his reverence for sports and recognized the legitimacy of the fairness argument being raised.
While he agreed with Kirk on the fairness issue, Newsom also expressed empathy for transgender individuals, criticizing the dismissive attitudes often directed toward vulnerable communities.
He acknowledged that Democrats are struggling to address this topic effectively and that the party is facing significant backlash.
The governor emphasized the need for a more nuanced conversation that respects both the integrity of sports and the rights of transgender individuals.
