The Trump administration has now reportedly repurposed an immigration app initially created by the Biden administration, transforming it into a tool for self-deportation.
The app, known as CBP One, was originally designed to help migrants schedule appointments at the border.
Under the new version, dubbed CBP Home, individuals residing in the U.S. illegally can now register to voluntarily leave the country.
The updated app requires users to enter personal information, including citizenship details, the country they plan to return to, and contact information.
It also allows them to upload photos to verify their identity.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has stated that those who choose to self-deport will have the opportunity to return to the U.S. legally in the future, while those who remain risk arrest, detention, and a permanent ban on re-entry.
DHS officials have criticized the previous use of the CBP One app, claiming it facilitated the illegal entry of over a million individuals into the U.S.
They argue that the new CBP Home app aims to restore integrity to the immigration process.
The app is set to automatically update for users who had previously downloaded the CBP One app, allowing DHS to track migrants for potential removal.
This shift reflects a significant change in immigration policy, emphasizing a stricter approach under the Trump administration.
The alterations to the app and its intended use have sparked discussions about the implications for both illegal migrants and the broader immigration system in the United States.
