CNN Lets Loose Unforgiving Fact Check on Gavin Newsom

In a recent segment aired on CNN, California Governor Gavin Newsom reportedly faced scrutiny over his claim that no one in his office has ever used the term “Latinx.”

This claim emerged during an interview with Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, where Newsom aimed to distance himself from certain liberal policies of the past.

Newsom stated, “Not one person ever in my office has ever used the word Latinx,” prompting a thorough fact-check from CNN’s KFile senior editor, Andrew Kaczynski.

During the segment on Erin Burnett OutFront, Kaczynski presented a montage of clips showcasing Newsom using the term on multiple occasions between 2020 and 2023.

In addition, the network highlighted several instances of him mentioning “the Latinx community” on social media.

Kaczynski remarked, “You see there, that is a lot of use of ‘Latinx’ by him for somebody who said that nobody in his office has ever used that phrase.”

The CNN segment didn’t stop there; it also addressed Newsom’s attempts to dissociate himself from a California law that allows transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports. Newsom claimed, “It turns out in 2014, years before I was governor, there was a law established that established the legal principles that allow trans athletes in women’s sports,” implying he had no role in its inception.

Kaczynski challenged this narrative, noting Newsom had served as lieutenant governor at the time and had actively supported the law.

In response to the backlash, Newsom’s office stated that while “Latinx” is not regularly used by his administration, it reflects his commitment to inclusivity. CNN’s fact-checking created significant dialogue around Newsom’s statements and political positioning.
