A court in North Carolina has upheld the state’s new voting district maps.

Republicans drew the new map and a judge rejected claims that the new districts were illegally gerrymandered for partisan purposes.

A panel of judges reminded Democrats that redistricting is a partisan process that has political consequences as they upheld the districting done by the Republicans in the state.

Advocacy groups argued that the new districts gave the GOP a partisan advantage and should be stopped, the panel disagreed.

The groups challenging the issue promised an appeal and the court signaled that it would take up appeals to the ruling on an expedited basis.

Nationwide, Republicans control redistricting in states that control 187 congressional districts compared to Democrats who control 75 districts.
