Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y) found success early in a 50-50 Senate but is now finding progress hard to come by.
Schumer is responsible for pushing Joe Biden’s agenda through the Senate as was able to get some wins, including an infrastructure package and a Covid relief package.
However, recently, losses have begun to pile up for the Democrats and Biden. Biden’s $2 trillion economic and climate plan failed to advance and his overt push to get voting laws passed suffered a swift and convincing death at the hands of his own party.
The biggest challenge has been getting Senators Joe Manchin (D-W.V.), and Kyrsten Sinema (D.-Ariz.) to agree to end the long-standing Senate rule of the filibuster in order to push through the progressive legislation without bipartisan suprport.
Schumer is going to attempt to push through the legislation and call the bluffs of Manchin and Sinema but only time will tell if the Senator from New York has played his hand correctly.
