Axios is reporting that “President Biden’s advisers are discussing a possible visit to Saudi Arabia this spring to help repair relations and convince the Kingdom to pump more oil.
“A hat-in-hand trip would illustrate the gravity of the global energy crisis driven by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Biden has chastised Saudi Arabia, and the CIA believes its de facto leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was involved in the dismemberment of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.”
The appeal to Saudi Arabia comes on the heels of the White House sending diplomats to Venezuela and Secretary of State Pete Buttigieg told MSNBC that buying oil from Iran is “on the table.”
The United States accused Venezuela’s authoritarian leader Nicolás Maduro of election fraud in 2019. The Trump administration responded to the stolen election by recognizing opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the legitimate president and placing harsh oil sanctions on the country. These are the sanctions the Biden administration appears to be willing to lift. The previous leader of the South American country, avowed socialist Hugo Chavez, a mentor of Maduro, once stated that the United States was the greatest threat looming over our planet.
Florida Senator Marco Rubio chastised the Biden Administration in a tweet. “Rather than produce more American oil he wants to replace the oil we buy from one murderous dictator with oil from another murderous dictator.”
While the president shops for foreign oil, he still refuses to expand American oil production at home. The Wall Street Journal reported that Biden “hasn’t held an onshore lease sale and is the only President in at least two decades not to have done so in a given year. Approvals for new liquefied natural gas terminals and expansions are also sitting at the Department of Energy and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, according to the American Petroleum Institute.”
In early December 2018, the US turned into a net exporter of oil for at least a week, breaking nearly 75 continuous years of dependence on foreign oil. Reportedly, the US sold overseas a net of 211,000 barrels a day of crude and refined products such as gasoline and diesel and was confirmed by the US Energy Information Administration. Joe Biden famously said during the 2020 campaign that he “would transition away from the oil industry.”
