Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) made an astonishingly bold assertion in an interview with The New York Times, predicting that if the Republican Party regains control of the House in the midterm elections, she will wield enormous authority.
Greene talked with Times reporter Robert Draper many times in recent months, and their chats were compiled in a lengthy feature published Monday in the New York Times Magazine.
Greene even went so far as to imply that if that didn’t happen, Republican House Leader Kevin McCarthy would face retaliation (R-CA).
Greene told Draper that if the GOP retakes the majority, she expects a flurry of investigations, including attempts to impeach Biden.
When pressed Greene insisted that those political observers who believe McCarthy would never sanction such a bold move were seriously ‘underestimating’ him.
Greene went on to say that the GOP base’s desire for payback after the dual impeachments of former President Trump would be too much pressure for McCarthy to withstand.
“I think that to be the best speaker of the House and to please the base, he’s going to give me a lot of power and a lot of leeway,” Greene said.
“And if he doesn’t, they’re going to be very unhappy about it. I think that’s the best way to read that. And that’s not in any way a threat at all. I just think that’s reality.” The congresswoman continued.
Democrat Marcus Flowers is running against Greene in her Georgia district this year, a race he is almost certain to lose in the heavily Republican Georgia area, meaning Greene will almost certainly serve a second term in Congress.
A term that, if current projections come to fruition, will likely be enhanced by being an influential part of a GOP congressional majority.
