Former President Trump reportedly chastised Democratic legislators on Friday for publishing many years’ worth of his tax returns, warning of catastrophic implications for the country while bragging about his ability to avoid paying income taxes.
Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee, which controls tax policy and the IRS, published redacted copies of Trump’s 2015-2020 personal and company tax returns on Friday.
Last week, the panel issued a report summarizing Trump’s records, which revealed how the former president evaded paying taxes for several years by utilizing tax incentives and regulations designed to boost corporate investment.
“The Democrats should have never done it, the Supreme Court should have never approved it, and it’s going to lead to horrible things for so many people. The great USA divide will now grow far worse.” the former president said in a statement.
“The ‘Trump’ tax returns once again show how proudly successful I have been and how I have been able to use depreciation and various other tax deductions as an incentive for creating thousands of jobs and magnificent structures and enterprises,” he added.
The committee obtained Trump’s tax returns earlier this year after the Supreme Court dismissed his petition to safeguard them, bringing a two-year legal struggle over the records to a close.
Trump was the only president since Richard Nixon to refuse to reveal any of his tax returns to the public while in office.
Democrats who demanded Trump’s tax returns claimed that it was critical for Americans to know if the former president was abiding by federal law and if the IRS was carrying out its job to audit the president.
Trump and Republican legislators claimed that there was no valid justification for Congress to seek Trump’s personal financial records, and they characterized the Democratic efforts as a political witch hunt.
