GOP State Senator In Texas Charged With Drunk Driving

According to a new report from WTAW, Texas Republican state Sen. Charles Schwertner was detained Tuesday morning for reportedly driving intoxicated.

Schwertner was caught during a traffic check at 12:45 a.m. and sent to the Travis County Jail, where he was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.

He was freed after posting a $3,000 personal bond.

Schwertner has been the chairman of the Business and Commerce Committee in the Texas state Senate since 2013.

An officer observed a 2022 black Cadillac veering to the right and left on the way to the traffic stop.

According to the affidavit, the senator had bloodshot, glassy, and watery eyes, was disoriented, and spoke with slurred speech.

In 2018, the Republican was accused of sending sexual messages and a photo of male genitals to a female graduate student at the University of Texas.

He rejected the charges, but asked not to be reappointed to the Health and Human Services Committee until the 2019 parliamentary session.

He later issued an impromptu public apology to his constituents and family after being released from jail.
