According to a person familiar with the case, former Vice President Mike Pence has reportedly now been subpoenaed by the special counsel examining former President Donald Trump’s bid to remain in office after the 2020 election and his participation in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.
Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed special counsel Jack Smith in November to handle the Justice Department’s investigations into Trump’s participation in the incident as well as the former president’s handling of confidential papers after he left office.
According to the source, the subpoena is relevant to the Jan. 6 probe.
The move is one of the most forceful in the probe into charges that Trump and his associates attempted to rig the 2020 election.
The subpoena follows months of talks between Pence’s legal team and federal prosecutors.
Last year, Attorney General Merrick Garland authorized Smith to examine Trump’s alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election and his handling of confidential papers discovered at his Mar-a-Lago estate.
