On Friday, Vice President Kamala Harris reportedly plans to travel to Nashville in order to lobby for stricter gun control and speak with two Democratic lawmakers from Tennessee who were kicked out of the General Assembly as a result of their participation in a demonstration for gun control on the floor of the statehouse.
Rep. Justin Jones (D-Nashville) and Rep. Justin Pearson (D-Memphis) were voted out of the Tennessee House of Representatives on Thursday by a vote of 69-26 and 72-25, respectively.
These actions drew criticism from President Joe Biden and became a national flashpoint for debates on gun control and racial inequality.
The trip was hastily scheduled in response to these events.
The two Black lawmakers, along with another Democrat, Representative Gloria Johnson of Knoxville, were disciplined by Republicans for leading protests with bullhorns from the House floor following a shooting rampage that took place at a Nashville private Christian school that resulted in the deaths of six people.
An official from the White House confirmed that Harris would be making the trip and stated that she would be going to Nashville to “lift the voices” of thousands of far-left activists.
These activists have been leading demonstrations at the Tennessee state Capitol in an effort to change gun laws, but they have not been successful in swaying the state’s Republican majority.
Harris, whose arrival on Friday afternoon was anticipated, will also reiterate Biden’s request that Congress impose a statewide prohibition on so-called assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
