Lee Zeldin, a former Republican representative from New York, reportedly declared on Monday that he is supporting former President Donald Trump’s bid for the presidency in 2024.
By emphasizing violent crime, Zeldin’s unsuccessful 2022 campaign for governor of New York against Democratic incumbent Gov. Kathy Hochul exceeded expectations.
In a state that President Biden carried by more than 20 points in 2020, Hochul beat Zeldin by six points.
As the Republican National Committee (RNC) underperformed expectations in the 2022 election cycle, Zeldin allegedly thought about challenging Ronna McDaniel for her post as chair.
When Republican attorney Harmeet Dhillon made the decision to challenge McDaniel for her seat, Zeldin made the decision not to run against her.
Zeldin established a Political Action Committee (PAC) in March with the goal of increasing Republican voting turnout among minorities and young people.
Republicans were able to recapture the House in the 2022 midterm elections thanks in part to his campaign’s assistance in helping the state’s GOP congressional candidates win a number of close races.
