On Thursday, hours before Title 42 was about to expire, a federal judge in Florida reportedly rejected the Biden Administration’s plan to release thousands of migrants into the country without court dates or the capacity to follow them.
U.S. District Judge Kent Wetherell granted the request of Republican officials in Florida and halted the “quick release” policy supported by the Biden administration, which permits immigrants to enter the country without being registered with Immigration and Customs Enforcement offices for court dates.
The 14-day interim suspension was mandated to begin on May 11 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.
The decision was slammed by Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) officers on Thursday, who said it would lead to congestion at already crowded border facilities.
During the COVID-19 epidemic, Title 42, a public health statute, was put into effect, enabling the US to impose travel restrictions based on health-related considerations.
The Biden administration said in October 2021 that it would start to gradually stop using Title 42 to limit immigration to the United States.
