Rep Matt Gaetz Introduces New Legislation to Crack Down on ‘Zombie Donors’

Rep. Matt Gaetz, a Republican from Florida, reportedly proposed a measure on Wednesday that would alter the Internal Revenue Code to require a billing address and credit verification value (CVV) for contributions to political organizations.

The goal of this legislation is to reduce the likelihood of fraudulent campaign donations occurring.

The act is a response to a report that was published on March 28 by an investigative news company called O’Keefe Media Group.

The article describes a countrywide scheme to use older individuals who match a similar profile as vehicles to launder millions of dollars into political campaigns.

This revelation was the impetus for the legislation.

In April, Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida wrote a letter to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) about the possibility of illegal donations coming from the leftist organization Act Blue.

“Through the diligent efforts of citizen journalists, O’Keefe Media Group has uncovered potentially millions of dollars in campaign donation fraud. Unidentified entities or individuals are using the identities of American citizens to perpetrate fraudulent campaign contributions. Termed as ‘zombie donors,’ these fraudulent transactions exploit payment methods that possess scant or negligible identity authentication mechanisms,” Congressman Gaetz said in a statement to The Daily Caller.

“The ‘Put Zombie Donors to Rest Act’ aims to amend the Internal Revenue Code and mandates the inclusion of both a credit verification value (CVV) and a billing address as mandatory requirements for confirming the donor’s true identity, cross-referencing it with the corresponding address or banking information,” he continued.
