The Democratic governor of New Mexico, Michelle Lujan Grisham, reportedly came under fire from CNN’s Poppy Harlow on Tuesday for enforcing an emergency gun ban despite acknowledging that criminals are unlikely to follow the order.
Grisham, citing a public health emergency, issued an emergency order prohibiting the possession of any weapons in Albuquerque for 30 days.
It is now forbidden to carry openly or covertly according to Grisham’s order.
Given a recent spate of gun killings, Grisham asserted that gun violence is a public health emergency.
A reporter questioned Grisham about her belief that criminals, who are accountable for the shootings that prompted the statement, would obey her order during the press conference announcing it.
Grisham promptly answered that she didn’t’ believe criminals would obey the order.
Grisham defended her response by saying that she has always supported rules and restrictions on the possession of firearms and that gun violence is “unacceptable.”
“You said ‘no.’ Are you going to keep doing this? Thirty days, 30 days, take it up to the Supreme Court or is this about a statement right now?”Harlow continuned.
“Are you over-reaching?” Harlow asked.
“Uh, uh, in this situation, I don’t think so,” the Governor responded
