At a news conference about the migrant crisis in New York City on Friday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other Democrats were reportedly loudly heckled by a group of citizen’s fed up with the migrant crisis currently gripping New York City.
Demonstrators shouting “send them back!” and “close the border!” drowned out the Democrats speaking in front of a Manhattan hotel that has been turned into a refuge for asylum seekers.
According to local officials, the Roosevelt Hotel serves as a center for all migrants’ arrivals where they can obtain meals, immunizations, and appointments with caseworkers.
“Close the border! Close the border! Respect the constitution, AOC! I am your constituent!,” a man with a megaphone could be heard yelling as Cortez spoke
Along with Ocasio-Cortez and Espaillat, the delegation included Democratic Reps. Veronica Escobar, Sylvia Garcia, Joaquin Castro, Nydia Velazquez, Mike Quigley, Delia Ramirez, Jimmy Gomez, and Tony Cárdenas from California, as well as Rob Menendez from New Jersey and Nydia Velazquez from Texas.
Eric Adams, the mayor of New York City, made his most dire prognostication about the future of the city earlier this month, saying that the city was on the brink of disaster due to the situation.
The Big Apple is now dealing with an influx of more than 110,000 migrants since last year.
