Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) reportedly made the decision to not run for reelection on Monday, citing her deteriorating health issues.
Wexton, 55, disclosed her Parkinson’s disease diagnosis in April and said at the time that it had “primarily affected” her speech but that she planned to continue serving.
“I’m heartbroken to have to give up something I have loved after so many years of serving my community. But taking into consideration the prognosis for my health over the coming years, I have made the decision not to seek reelection once my term is complete and instead spend my valued time with Andrew, our boys, and my friends and loved ones.” Wexton announced.
However, the Virginia Democrat claimed that her diagnosis was now progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) in the long statement released on Monday.
She claimed that after her previous treatment plan failed to help her manage her problems, she sought out additional tests.
Wexton won her first term in Congress by flipping a Republican-held district during the 2018 midterm elections. She has now won two more elections to continue serving the suburbs outside of Washington, D.C. in Virginia’s 10th district.
