Following his shocking removal as Speaker earlier this week, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) stated on Friday that he is not stepping down from his position and intends to seek for reelection in 2024.
When asked if he intended to run for office again the following year, McCarthy said “yes.”
“I’m not resigning. I got a lot more work to do,” McCarthy continued.
The remarks came soon after Politico reported that McCarthy was thinking about leaving the House before his term was up, citing two people with knowledge of the situation.
But McCarthy made it clear to the media that he had no intention of leaving Capitol Hill.
Days after the House voted to remove the California Republican as Speaker, marking the first time in history that a politician was ejected from the chamber’s top position, rumors about McCarthy’s time in Congress began to circulate.
With all Democrats present, eight Republicans, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), voted to remove McCarthy from his position in a 216-210 vote, partly in response to GOP dissatisfaction with McCarthy’s choice to bring forward a “clean” continuing resolution to avoid a government shutdown.
Both chambers passed the interim legislation with resounding bipartisan support.
