On Thursday, a Tennessee man was found guilty of trying to give material to ISIS.
After an eight-day trial, a jury found Knoxville resident Benjamin Carpenter, 31, guilty of attempting to help ISIS financially.
Carpenter, a citizen of the United States, is listed as the founder and director of Ahlut-Tawhid Publications, a worldwide group tasked with the publication of pro-ISIS and official ISIS material in English.
He wrote a weekly newspaper under the identity “Abu Hamza,” which glorified suicide bombers, called for an open war against the United States, and welcomed the deaths of American soldiers.
Carpenter made touch with a person he thought was affiliated with ISIS in 2020 and 2021, but it turned out to be a secret FBI agent.
According to the Department of Justice’s Eastern District of Tennessee division, Carpenter sent that undercover agent translations of ISIS media content for ISIS to exploit.
Carpenter now faces a maximum 20-year prison term in addition to a lifetime of probation after being released from prison. His sentence date has not yet been determined.
