Federico Klein, a former State Department assistant in the Trump administration, is now facing a 70-month prison sentence for his role in the Jan. 6 rioting.
After a two-week bench trial covering 12 offenses, 44-year-old Klein was found guilty.
These charges included six counts of assaulting or obstructing officers, knowing entering or remaining in a restricted area, knowing and intending to obstruct or disrupt government business, using loud, abusive, or threatening language on Capitol property, physically attacking someone there, and impeding a government proceeding.
There were four misdemeanor offenses and eight felonies total.
Klein, who held a top-secret security clearance, was being sought by federal prosecutors for a 10-year term.
There was evidence shown in the trial that Klein had discussed his knowledge of the congressional hearings scheduled for that day.
In relation to January 6, Klein was the first official in former president Donald Trump’s administration to be detained.
In addition, he completed a tour of duty in Iraq in 2005 during his nine years in the Marine Corps.
On January 6, Klein borrowed a police shield from a patrolman to help prop open a Capitol tunnel door.
Prosecutors alleged that rioters and police engaged in combat in the tunnel for two hours, in part due to Klein’s action.
