According to authorities, a man in New York City has now been charged with reckless endangerment after he intervened to assist a woman who was being robbed by a homeless man at a subway station and discharged multiple bullets.
According to the New York Times, at 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday night at a Manhattan subway station, John Rote, 43, allegedly fired two shots in the direction of a mugger who had approached a woman.
He was then charged with criminal possession of a firearm, criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment, and menacing.
Rote was chastised by New York officials who said that his actions were intolerable.
The 49-year-old Matthew Roesch is accused of approaching a woman as he was holding an emergency gate open.
He then attempted to grab her pocketbook, according to the police, at which point “another customer pulled out a gun and tried to intervene.”
Rote was detained on $10,000 bond, and Roesch was freed under court-ordered monitoring after being charged with attempted robbery.
NYPD Inspector Steven Hill claims that Roesch has been a “continuous problem” and is well-known for pressuring passengers to give him money.
