Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas), who is currently running to be the next mayor of Houston, issued a bizarre campaign advertisement that encouraged her supporters to cast their ballots on the wrong day.
Her advertisement aired on Houston’s various television markets and urged voters to cast their ballots “on or before December 7th.”
The incident appears to have been a major mistake on the part of Jackson’s campaign.
On Saturday, December 9, Jackson Lee will compete in the runoff election to replace Mayor Sylvester Turner (D).
Jackson Lee highlights her experience serving in Congress and city council in the advertisement.
In an election that began with sixteen candidates, Jackson Lee is now in opposition to early frontrunner State Senator John Whitmire.
Other candidates were easily defeated by the two in a campaign that has been dominated by concerns regarding crime, infrastructure, and possible budget deficits.
Additional contenders comprised former Houston Metropolitan Transit Authority Chairman Gilbert Garcia, former City Council Member Amanda Edwards, former Harris County Clerk Chris Hollins (D), and House City Council Member Robert Gallegos.
The 18th district of Texas is represented by Jackson Lee, who took office in 1995. She declared her candidacy for mayor in March, entering an already congested field.
