This week, Eric Adams, the Democratic mayor of New York City, acknowledged that a subset of the recent illegal immigrants to enter the city are committing “robbery patterns.”
Adams delivered the remarks on Tuesday during a press conference.
He added hastily that immigrants do not solely bear responsibility for the escalation of grand theft auto and other forms of illicit activity in the city.
“There are people who are committing crimes in all walks of life. It’s not just migrants and asylum seekers. I think that we have a number of migrants who have committed crimes. We have a number of non-migrants who are committing crimes,” Adams said.
Adams was confronted by the reporter regarding the specific data upon which he based his claim that migrants had committed offenses.
Since the spring of 2022, approximately 161,000 migrants, primarily from Venezuela, have surged into New York City; roughly half of these individuals remain in the city’s care.
The city has been compelled to establish additional shelters and reduce the funding of all municipal departments, including sanitation, public schools, and law enforcement, due to the crisis.
Adams estimated that the city could incur expenses of up to $12 billion due to the influx of migrants.
Both Adams and Kathy Hochul, the Democratic governor of New York, have petitioned the Biden administration for federal assistance to alleviate the city’s financial burden.
